A sensual spa experience can be a wonderful retreat from the stresses of everyday life - so just lie back and relax.

Sometimes the complications and stresses of everyday life, work, health and relationships really take their toll and mind, body and spirit cry out for a break and a little pampering and tender loving care.

So a retreat to a spa to escape from humdrum reality is just the ticket - you can leave your stressed self at the door and emerge looking and feeling fantastic and rejuvenated.

In the North East, we are blessed with many spas, from nationally-renowned spas, those recommended by the Good Spa Guide, to new spas on the block which are unknown to many yet offer a myriad of treatments from the old favourites to new exclusive non-invasive procedures.

You can relax in treatment rooms being pampered to the maximum, or enjoy a swim in a pool, join an exercise class, use gym facilities, release tension courtesy of a sauna or just simply, lie, back, relax and enjoy your peaceful tranquil surroundings. North East Life looks at a varied selection of the finest spas in the area.

Recommended by the Good Spa Guide, Headlam Hall Spa is a heavenly rural retreat and you will instantly feel all the cobwebs blow away and the tension escape your body when you witness the wonderful sight of the outdoor hydrotherapy pool. The countryside location offers breathtaking views and you feel tucked away from the rest of the world.

Several options are available for Spa Days, with the choice of treatments left up to you. Additionally, spa breaks are available. Midweek Mini Spa Breaks with overnight stay included (£80-£110) and the attractively-named Sunday Afternoon Spa (£65) sound simply irresistible. For those sneaking in for a quick beauty treatment, the fantastic list will have you struggling to choose only one.

Seaham Hall's Serenity Spa (pictured left) has many accolades under its belt including being voted Best Spa for Style by The Sunday Times and Best UK Spa Destination by Conde Nast Traveller.

It is easy to see why it has attracted national recognition, with fixtures such as thermal baths, ozone cleansed pool with massage stations, hydrotherapy bath, ice shower and outdoor hot tubs.

Water is used in various guises to pamper, and the exquisite design of the Serenity Spa is inspired by Feng Shui and distinctly oriental in design with stunning feature pieces taking centre-stage as you wander around this oasis of calm. With over 45 different beauty treatments on offer plus luxurious Day Rituals (£170+) and heavenly spa break special offers (£220) inclusive of overnight stay running only until December, this is one retreat away from the grind that could oh so quickly become addictive.

Next on our spa radar is a little known location in the heart of Durham. Inside the Radisson SAS Hotel on Framwellgate Waterside lies PACE Health Club and the Emmanais beauty salon. It offers a combination of swimming facilities, state-of-the-art gym, sauna, jacuzzi and a combination of much loved quick and easy beauty treatments alongside exclusive non-surgical facelift treatments unique to the area.

Non-surgical treatments include mini-lifts, the little miracle wonder facial, mini non-invasive eyelifts and Oxyjet Oxygen Facials renowned for instantly noticeable anti-ageing effects.

Additionally, Beautytox the beauty injection without the needle and an energiser facial, perfect for the morning after the night before, are available within Emmanais. Pamper packages include the Luxury Spa Ritual (£166) and the Summer Time Special Pamper Gift (£66) which you can buy for a loved one - or purchase to treat yourself.

Nu-Age Medical Spa based over two locations in Newcastle is a first, not only in the region but in the UK, as it offers diverse, wellbeing services under one practice.

The bustling spa offers cosmetic surgery, non-surgical treatments, cosmetic dentistry, anti-ageing programmes and cosmeceuticals. The spa prides itself on providing unique treatments and the deeply relaxing mind, body and sensory experience of Flotation Therapy is certainly well worth a visit.

When inside the floatation tank, it creates a state of sensory relaxation as mind and body are shielded from all external stimulation. This reduces the brain's normal frenetic workload by up to 90%, allowing the body to conserve energy, heal and rejuvenate itself. The floatation tank experience is also great for skin as the high salt levels leave skin soft and silky. An introductory package of Flotation Therapy is currently on special offer (£75).

Our last whistle-stop sampling of the region's spas takes us to Matfen Hall Spa in Northumberland which too has a firm recommendation in the Good Spa Guide and is situated in a picturesque sprawling green countryside location.

To ensure total relaxation for spa customers at Matfen Hall, a 'fire and ice' experience is available for unlimited use as part of a Day Escape (£160+) or Residential Escape (£152.50+). The spa offers some truly unique facilities which certainly offer the wow factor including a Soothing Salt Grotto which clears congestion and boosts circulation to aid in the elimination of toxins
