Street performers from all over the world will put on a show Stockton this month

Stockton will celebrate a special 25th anniversary this month as it hosts the International Riverside Festival. The street arts festival has helped put Stockton on the global map and will feature a stellar cast of UK and international artists who and will transform the town with startling and beautiful images drawn from ancient myth, folk tales and the machines of the modern world.

Performers will soar above Stockton High Street, while on the ground, gigantic children rub shoulders with the creatures of the forest and the River Tees will become a highway of dreams.

This years festival takes place from August 1st-5th and after dark on the opening night, Stockton High Street will become a magical setting for a large scale interpretation of the story of Prometheus, who bestowed fire on humanity and incurred the wrath of Zeus.

The festival finale will use both promenade and aerial performance alongside stunning pyrotechnics.

Between those shows, other highlights include an exhibition of more than 100 lanterns based on the Terracotta Army from Beijing, the Community Carnival and an interactive sculpture garden from the German artist Gigantikow.

Frank Wilson, the festivals artistic director, said: In 1988 I was the director of an arts centre in Stockton and during the summer months people dont want to go to indoor events so I decided to take theatre to the streets. It was only intended to be a one-off. But we were lucky with the weather and the crowds flocked and there was the appetite to do it again the following year.

And alongside the Riverside Festival, the Stockton Weekender features a line-up of national and local bands including The Pogues, James, and We are Scientists, on two stages from August 3rd-5th.
