Northumberland is famed for its fantastic scenery, historic towns and villages and stunning coastline. And after dark it can be even more spectacular, as perfectly pictured in a new book

One of the most popular features in North East Life is our illustrated walks. Written and beautifully illustrated by Hexham photographer, David Taylor, they bring to life some of the most interesting and beautiful areas of the region and make them accessible.

But his new book - Northumberland Illuminated - was a challenge for him. The project started when he was commissioned by publishers, Halsgrove, to produce a book of illustrations of his home county by night.

'I was delighted. Although I had done night shots before, this was something very different for me,' said David. 'I wanted to pinpoint some of the more classic scenery - the castles and well-known structures - with other interesting parts of Northumberland.'

So while others were comfortably tucked up on their sofas for the evening, David sought out these places, turning his creative eye to the lighting challenges posed by each location.

He admits the first month of the project was largely guesswork and experimentation with lighting - going out with lots of lamps and flashguns to try and get the right effect.

'I am sure quite a few motorists going past on occasions must of thought it odd as all the flashguns went off, ' said David. 'But I wanted to try and look at scenes in a new way.'

David usually went out at dusk to try and get the best of any ambient light and the whole project took about six months to complete.

The results are stunning. Dozens of beautiful colour photographs of the county David, an award-winning landscape and travel photographer, loves.

His work has enabled him to travel all over the world, but his first love remains the coastline and awe-inspiring countryside of Northumberland.

His regular photography workshops around Northumberland are extremely popular with novices and experienced photographers alike and his stunning and atmospheric images are regularly exhibited at venues around the county.

So if you are looking for a book which will give you a deep warm glow on a dark evening, and an utterly fascinating perspective on this ancient border county, look no further.

Northumberland Illustrated is available from October 15 from Halsgrove. ISBN 978 1 84114 956 1. Price 14.99, hardback.
