The Chorister School

The Chorister School has been a part of Durham Cathedral for over 600 years.

Set in the magnificent grounds of The College, it provides a secure and intimate school environment, small enough for every child and family to be known and cared about, and yet also part of a much larger community on this very unique World Heritage site. The school is proud to be part of Durham Cathedral’s future, and we seek to provide creative and innovative learning experiences supported by the rigour of a traditional curriculum. Recent developments include extended boarding facilities and ‘new’ accommodation for the Middle School Department, housed in the beautifully converted medieval granary, and affording a perfect transition phase for children moving form the Pre-Prep into the Main School.

The catchment area for the school is essentially unlimited, and although there are many who live locally, several pupils attend from across the country, and a few from abroad.

The Chorister School is unique in being the only stand-alone Prep School in the area, and as such we are able to prepare children for entry to the senior schools which best suit the young adults they have become at 13. We offer support and advice in making the decision about your child’s senior education and are proud that no fewer than 60% of our pupils are awarded scholarships, exhibitions or academic entry places to their first choice senior schools. It is our aim that pupils are fully prepared with the skills, confidence, independence and curiosity which will inform their educational journey through to secondary level and beyond.

We are able to offer a comprehensive programme of care and activities before and after school. Children are welcome to come for breakfast, to stay for an evening meal or to board on a regular or flexi basis. We would be delighted to welcome you to the school for a visit.
