Sophie Simpson runs a garden design and consultancy business from her home in Northumberland. After completing a diploma course in Garden Design in Edinburgh in the late 1990s, she then worked for a landscaping company for two years before setting up a consultancy business at home in 2002.
She specialises in design, whether it be a complete garden started from scratch, part of an existing garden, a new water feature or structure, or a planting plan. Having had many years experience in practical gardening on a large scale advice is also offered on planting of trees, shrubs, perennials and bulbs along with tree and shrub pruning, vegetable growing, propagating and flowers to cut for the house.
Many owners have been creating gardens over several years and just need an opinion from a third party to reassure them that what they are doing is the best way to use the space. Often, new ideas for plants and uses for the garden will be discussed which the owner will not have come across or thought about before.
Some are not so experienced and need more in depth help, especially so in the case of people who inherit an established garden on moving into a new house. Sophie will spend time in the garden with the owner to establish what they do and dont know or understand and produce a report tailored to that situation.
Not everybody wants to have a garden designed but might want to use the space to grow their own fruit, vegetables and flowers. Sophie will produce a written report which can be referred to over time and is a useful means of tailoring the clients needs to the space available. If required, practical hands-on sessions in your garden over the year can also be organised.
An initial meeting will involve a walk around the garden to discuss the climate, soil and aspect and the requirements, likes and dislikes of the clients. It is normally possible to estimate the cost of the design work at this stage.
After a site survey, a full, coloured plan of the proposed garden is produced, along with planting plans and construction details if necessary, to give as much information as possible to the owner and any gardeners or landscapers who may be involved.
Sophie can recommend reliable contractors to tender for the jobs if necessary. She normally sources plants and can also advise on ornament, seating and paving types if necessary.
