Durham restaurant Bistro 21 is welcoming back a couple of old friends who have been down under to freshen up their food and hospitality, knowledge and skills.
Robbie Bell, 30 of Gateshead, returns from Australia to become head chef of the restaurant, at Aykley Heads, Durham, after working in two of Sydneys most popular and prestigious restaurants.
He is joined by girlfriend Rebecca Tofield, who has been appointed assistant manager.
Bistro 21, part of the 21 Hospitality Group led by renowned restaurateur Terry Laybourne, was recently named Highest Quality Assured and Local Produce Champion at the TasteDurham awards, hosted by tourism agency Visit County Durham.
Robbie joined the 21 Hospitality Group in 2003, developing his talents first as the junior sous chef at Newcastles Cafe 21. He moved to Jesmond Dene House Hotel as an integral part of the opening team, where he became resident sous chef.
After arriving in Sydney a year ago, Robbie gained six months experience in Quay, voted Australias best restaurant 2009/10. For his final six months, Robbie worked alongside famous Australian chef and restaurateur Neil Perry at his new up-market steak house, Rockpool Bar & Grill, winner of the Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide 2010 Best New Restaurant.
