ORGANISERS of Northumberland County Show have lined up a jaw-dropping judge with impressive credentials to select the winners of a Jubilee inspired fancy dress competition.

At 7ft 3ins tall and a dead ringer for James Bond villain, Jaws, Gary Tiplady is sure to stand out among the crowds at this years event, which is last the to be held at Tynedale Park in Corbridge on Bank Holiday Monday, June 4.

As entrants line up to take part in the one-off classes with a Rule Britannia theme to mark the Queens Diamond Jubilee, the Newcastle-born gentle giant who has made his living through lookalike appearances for the last 20 years, will be there to give his expert opinion on the costumes which make the biggest impression.

Ive travelled all over the world to make personal appearances as Jaws at all sorts of occasions, said 52-year-old Gary.

But theres nothing quite like coming home and I love meeting and greeting crowds at events here in the North-East.

After demonstrating natural talent in the kitchen as a youngster, Gary forged his early career as a chef and worked in prestigious kitchens such as Newcastles County Hotel and Morpeths Linden Hall in the North-East.

Ive even worked at the five star Gleneagles resort in Scotland and cooked for royalty at Kensington Palace, but I could never get away from people making comments about my height and the fact that I looked like Jaws, explained Gary.

So I decided to use it to my advantage and have never looked back.

Diagnosed with a hormonal disorder known as acromegaly in his teens, Gary has lived life learning to cope with the effects of his body producing too much growth hormone.

Ironically, it is the very condition which has helped him land numerous television and film roles, as well as his ticket to international James Bond events held across the globe.

But Garys talents dont stop there, for he is also an accomplished artist, with a particular eye for sculpture.

He said: Wire sculptures are something Im focusing on at the moment and most of them are animals with connections to the region.

Sculptures of pit ponies, Border Terriers, Farne Island puffins and even the legendary Lambton Worm have earned Gary exhibition space at the Biscuit Factory on Tyneside and the Cooper Gallery in Barnsley, to name just a few.

And his next showcase will be on show day as he plans to display his work on a pitch alongside more than 300 other trade stands at Corbridge.

I cant wait for Northumberland County Show, Im really looking forward to it and feel proud to be able to be part of such a fantastic event, said Gary.

Id tell anyone thinking of coming along in fancy dress to dare to be different and enjoy it!

So whether your costume is inspired by a famous monarch, showcases the best of British or youve come over all red, white and blue, why not take part in the classes to mark a right royal occasion in memorable style?

The free-to-enter classes are in age groups; 7 and under, 7 to 10, 10 to 16 and 16 and over. They will be judged in the Cumberland and Westmorland Wrestling ring at 12.30pm.
