Work by Quentin Blake, one of Britain's best-loved and most successful illustrators, will go on show at the Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle this weekend.

Commissioned by hospitals in the UK and abroad to produce works specially designed for specific hospital situations, Quentin Blake: As Large as Life brings together over 50 works showing a range of creative and life affirming approaches to a variety of contexts.

The exhibition is based on various hospital themes including mental health and people with eating disorders. Initiated from Blakes involvement with the Nightingale Project, a scheme to get art and music into hospitals, Blakes commission also includes; Mothers and Babies Underwater; one of Quentins biggest hospital projects based in Agers, France, and Welcome to Planet Zog, based at the Alexandra Avenue Health and Social Care Centre, South Harrow. This hospital caters for young people and Quentin's enormous imaginative and fun Planet Zog drawings now animate waiting areas and other public spaces.

Julie Milne, chief curator of art galleries, says: We are thrilled to host this exhibition by Quentin Blake. The themes included are challenging and typically Blake has produced work that is sensitive but also fun and life affirming. We hope visitors to the exhibition will be captivated by these commissioned works.

Blakes work has also provided the inspiration for many of the activities that we are hosting over the summer which we hope will keep visitors young and old busy and entertained.

Quentin Blake commented: I think the very presence of pictures helps to make being in, or visiting a hospital a more normal, less alien experience. What I have tried to include is a certain amount of detail, some interesting activities, and some suggestions of the little drama of relationships, so that the viewers especially any who have to wait may feel the desire to go on looking and perhaps even to speculate about the stories happening in front of them.

As part of the exhibition at the Laing, families and children alike will enjoy fun and arty activities taking place on regular Wednesdays. With a wide range of free, drop-in classes available there is something for everyone; from events themed around Quentin Blakes characters, to circus performances involving fire eating and juggling there will be lots to join in with.

Quentin Blake has won countless awards and was appointed Britains first Childrens Laureate. He is known by young and old alike, his name having been synonymous with his illustrations for Roald Dahls books.

The exhibition has been organised by Compton Verney in collaboration with the House of Illustration.

The Laing Art Gallery is open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 5pm and Sundays from 2pm to 5pm. Admission is free.
