The former Newcastle United and Middleborough players joined golfers from 30 businesses from around the region for Crutes Law Firms annual event, at Slaley Hall, near Hexham.

Other stars who took part included former boxing champion Billy Hardy, Sky Sports TV presenter Ian Payne and Big Brother contestant Liam McGough.

Helen Ager, managing partner at Crutes, said: We have raised money for Help for Heroes in the past through office raffles and other fundraising activities, but this is the largest fundraising effort to date.

Money was raised on the day through a raffle and a special auction, where one of the prizes was a Euro 96 England kit signed by all of the England players who played in that tournament.
