The finest flavours of Europe and the US are coming together at a North East bar to create a new style of comfort food.
Zio Bar and Grill at Jesmond Road, Jesmond, have launched a new range of light bites, snacks and meals, which combine the culinary styles of both continents.
From Big Apple-sized burgers to an Italian-inspired Caesar salad and traditional British fish and chips, the new menu uses seasonal ingredients to recreate a wide range dishes from both sides of the Atlantic.
This includes six burgers, from the classic American-style beef burger, to the more unusual sweet chilli chicken burger or spiced lamb burger, all available with a choice of five milk shakes, made using locally-sourced ice cream.
There’s also an extended range of dishes from the grill, including English rump, a large mixed grill and sirloin steak sirloin, sourced from the Wallington Estate, Northumberland.
For those looking for something a little lighter, the new menu also offers a variety of starters, such as deep fried potato skins and spiced chicken wings, as well as sandwiches, including the Zio Club with chicken, bacon, tomato and egg mayonnaise and salads, topped with sweet chilli chicken or Parma Ham.
It also includes a variety of platters, such as Mexican-inspired Nachos, a Fisherman’s platter serving up some of the finest British fish and a Foragers platter, which offers a selection from across the menu for those who are struggling to decide.
The new menu, which will be served during all normal opening hours, has been designed to complement Zio’s extensive cocktail menu and offer a more informal dining option to that provided by the bar’s sister venue, Fratello’s, which is next door.
Simon Wright, Operations Manager for the Cairn group, which owns both venues, said: “Fratello’s prides itself on offering high-quality Italian cuisine in stylish surroundings.
“With Zio we wanted be a little more laid back and have created this new blend of European and American-style comfort food to cater for more casual gathering, from a bite with colleagues after work to the start of a big night out with friends.”
The new menu at Zio bar and grill, which adjoins the Holiday Inn Newcastle Jesmond hotel, will be served from May 22, 2013. Prices range from £4.25 for a starter to £19.95 for the most expensive main course.
